The Definition of Strange [Inspiration #1]

You know who's so unique to me, and of course people call him strange? Adam Young of Owl City. He's an inspiration to me for being so "strange". I mean his lyrics are unbelievable, beautiful, metaphoric, confusing and inspirational all at once. To me, this insomniac and dreamer is an inspiration to this insomniac and dreamer. Yeah, I can relate. Here's an excerpt from Alligator Sky:

Where was I when the rockets came to life
And carried you away into the alligator sky
even though I never know what's up ahead
I'm never letting go, I'm never letting go

remember to breathe
because it'll take your breath away
when the engines cough and you blast off
ignite the night with a firecracker flash

remember to live
because you're going to be thrilled to death
when the stars collide and your eyes grow wide
take it in with your breath against the glass

remember to dream
because it's going to be a starry night
over every town, if you look down
so harmonize with the singing satellites

remember to scream
because you're going to be lost for words
when the sparks erupt and they light you up
dip your toes in the galaxy because it's yours to explore tonight

His songs are so awesomely expressive and beautifully crafted! I love it, and He's a Christian. His music shows that and it makes me smile to think that he's thinking about God as he writes. So many artists (people in general these days) call themselves Christian, but few people actually show it through their everyday life and work. I mean I'm a graphic designer, and the next job I accept may never allow me to display Scripture in my work. That doesn't mean other things in my life won't show it. My design portfolio has God all through it! Adam has written several songs to show his love for his Savior Jesus, such as Meteor Shower (favorite) and Tidal Wave!

Found this out today; Tidal Wave is all about faith. I put on my Owl City playlist while doing dishes and the words just screamed at me!!

I wish I had covered all my tracks completely
Cause I'm so afraid, is that the light at the far end of the tunnel or just the train

Lift your arms, only heaven knows where the danger grows
And it's safe to say there's a bright light up ahead and help is on the way

I forget the last time I felt brave, I just recall insecurity
Cause it came down like a tidal wave and sorrow swept over me

During my 2nd year at Purdue, I had a choice to make: a final project for my Photoshop class. My first sketch was of a teacup sitting on a window sill, reflecting the sun, but out the window was a moonlit night-sky. Whenever I described this to someone, they gave me a strange look. Like it wasn't normal. My final project ended up being a bowl of water, mid-splash as flowers and bamboo sticks floated about. Resembling a bowl of ramen or soup. What point am I trying to make here? I realize now that I'm not normal or ordinary, I'm exactly what God intended on me being. Everyone has a thing that makes them weird, whether it be drastic or subtle, and that's how it's meant to be.

I don't think Adam is strange, I think he's an inspiration to insomniacs and dreamers everywhere. I can relate to him in every way and I think it's awesome. :)

And yes, I plan to make this a painting someday.

Until we meet again!
